This article addresses the event of the retiring baby-boomer generation in the museum field and the generation set to replace them.

The Museum Association of New York (MANY’s board discussed succession planning through two topics: whether organizations have anticipated the leadership change through strategic planning and how the projected demographic shift of baby boomer retirements might affect leadership in state museums.

MANY conducted research through focus groups and surveys about the rate of retirement for those in leadership positions and also transition planning.

With the data they collect, MANY plans to continue to research, write, and lecture using New York museums as the lens to talk about the issues of museum leadership.

They also hope to produce templates and tools available online that will make the process of succession planning more palatable and less daunting.
