In September 2007, AASLH’s Internet Digital Encyclopedia Association (IDEA) affinity group initiated a project to facilitate long-term planning among digital encyclopedias as part of fulfillment of a Level I Digital Humanities Initiative Start-Up Grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

This white paper is a compilation of the findings from the project and provides a framework for developing content and technical standards for digital encyclopedias.

Core concepts are outlined, focusing on the goals of creating digital encyclopedias, administration and management of projects, content development and accessibility, and considerations for the infrastructure required for such a project.

The appendix provides case studies that show how to apply the concepts developed with models and examples of technology and standards.

An executive summary provides a qualitative description of the survey results.
