The Indianapolis Museum of Art (IMA) and American Alliance of Museums (AAM) have announced the release of the much-anticipated publication Rights & Reproductions: The Handbook for Cultural Institutions. The release marks the culmination of the two-year National Leadership Grant awarded to the IMA by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) in Sept. 2013. Co-published by the IMA and AAM, the publication is the first of its kind and will serve as an industry-wide standard of emerging best practices and guidelines in the rights and reproductions field.

If you are responsible for handling rights clearances, permissions, and intellectual property matters at a cultural institution of any kind, this handbook may be a valuable resource. Rights and Reproductions: the Handbook for Cultural Institutions is the first comprehensive resource to focus solely on the rights and reproductions guidelines, established standards and, emerging best practices at cultural institutions.

Contributors provide general guidance on how to approach the administration and management of intellectual property assets in chapters such as:

  • Intellectual Property
  • Institutional Intellectual Property Policies
  • Rights Issues for the Collection
  • Institutional Uses
  • Leveraging Content with Distribution Partners
  • Intellectual Property and the Public
