Historic cemeteries are important to the cultural landscape in any community.

The Texas Historical Commission provides guidelines that can be applied in any state for the protection and preservation of historic cemeteries, including how to protect a cemetery and steps to take if a cemetery is in danger. Initial steps for preserving a cemetery are outlined, including surveying and creating a master plan of the property.

This leaflet also contains practical tips on maintenance issues such as repairs and cleaning stones.

A list of definitions for surveying cemeteries and a template for cemetery designation are included.
