This report remarks on the teaching of history in the United States, specifically on its decline.

Larry E. Tise writes about the democratization of American history, public participation and the history profession, a new ethic for history, and a plan of action.

He says that it is possible and necessary to launch a new ethic among history professionals and the test of their success will be if they can present national history in a manner as exciting as Americans already know and love the realms of local, personal, and vocational history.
