Carol Kammen discusses the challenges that smaller museums face in dealing with expanding their audience beyond aging docents and young school children.

Kammen says one of the ways to do this is to engage families.

And since families consists on a myriad of members with different engagement needs, museums can provide (with low cost impacts) opportunities for fun and learning for all age groups.

For example, scavenger hunts within the galleries for the whole group, smart phone apps for teens, or coloring activity for the younger children.
