Carol Kammen speaks of the importance of attending AASLH annual meetings.

She says just simply being there, and in the company of her peers of shared interests, knowledge and problems was rewarding.

She discusses meeting new people, seeing old friends and sitting in on sessions where she saw real discussion that was honest and challenging.

She concludes that meetings such as this are good places to see leadership in history and to remind oneself that we are professionals among others in a field that is often not quite understood and that is sometimes poorly defined, but one that is always interesting, and sometimes thrilling.
