Local governments are placing an increasing reliance on computers and the result is a displacement of traditional paper files by “machine-readable records” on such magnetic media as tapes, disks, and diskettes.

Despite this major change in recording media, many traditional records management principles still need to be employed insure the proper and systematic use and disposition of those records.

This technical leaflet deals with the basic and critical considerations in managing machine-readable records, including systems design, retention and disposition scheduling, and special handling and storage requirements.
