While many museums employ measurements to assess attendance totals and budget growth in order to gauge success, they often fall short of quantifying an institution’s value and weaknesses from a visitor’s perspective – both of which are helpful when planning for an institution’s future direction and sustainability.

AASLH adopted a model of measurement from the Center for Nonprofit Management which looked at visitor satisfaction and opinions, root cause analyses, problem solving, and plans to re-measure to confirm problems have been corrected.

To date, fifty institutions have taken part in the Performance Management program. This article is a summary of two institutions’ experience with the program.
