Purchasing cooperatives among museums bring institutions together to buy supplies in bulk, typically to get better archival and other necessary supplies at a cheaper price.

This leaflet uses the Colorado/Wyoming Association of Museums’ purchasing cooperative as an example and highlights its success in providing its members with knowledge about museum vendors and reduced prices on supplies.

Lynn Swain and Duffy Keller explain how to create a purchasing cooperative with step-by-step instructions, beginning with forming a purchasing committee and ending with the bidding process for supplies. Also included are examples of forms the Colorado/Wyoming Association of Museums committee drafted for purchasing and bidding on products.
