In this Award Winner Spotlight, Rikki Davenport discusses two museum/school partnerships that recently received Leadership in History Awards from AASLH. Both programs worked to engage students with history in new and unique ways that sparked curiosity and understanding, as well as to inspire active young learners with a love of museums.

The Kentucky Historical Society’s History smArts program brought images and artifacts from the museum into classrooms, with facilitators and educators working to increase skills in visual literacy, historical literacy, and critical thinking. At the State Historical Museum of Iowa, staff collaborated with Des Moines public school teachers to develop an innovative program that builds relationships between at-risk student populations while engaging them in the study of Iowa history and culture.
