In this theme document for the 2012 AASLH Annual Meeting in Salt Lake City, David Donath shares his experiences working for the Woodstock Foundation which runs Billings Farm and Museum in Vermont.

He recounts how focusing on the personal stories in relation to place can allow people who live in that area to have a new-found appreciation for where they

live. He also emphasizes how the same can create sustainability through tourism (which contributes economically, culturally, and socially) without adding a sense of commercialism to the site.
