This article addresses the challenges that can come along with introducing GLBT history into already established museum exhibits and historic houses.

The challenges include:

  • Institutional policies against discussing sexuality
  • Lack of documentary evidence
  • Applying modern labels to historical figures
  • Pressure from stakeholders to avoid controversial topics.

Many examples come from the interpretation of residences of people who were gay or lesbian.

This article also addresses the idea of museums and historic houses becoming wholly representative of their communities.
