Taxing Maine is a 30 minute play about the history of Maine’s taxes performed at The Theater at Monmouth in central Maine.

The creators of the play sought to encourage Mainers to explore and discuss the history and idea of taxes – where they come from, the principles underlying them, and the ways in which they serve and connect citizens.

The play is based entirely on public records and provides a picture of Maine’s evolution into one of the highest taxed states in America.

The play has been successful in provoking audiences to exchange thoughts and facilitate conversation about the ideas and issues raised by the production.

Taxing Maine brought community members together around an important issue in new ways by educating, provoking, and entertaining them and creating a two-way exchange of ideas.
