In 2005 Heritage Preservation Inc published A Public Trust at Risk: The Heritage Health Index Report on the State of America’s Collections which caused great consternation in the world of collecting museums and libraries.

The Heritage Health Index (HHI) reported what many in the field already feared-that without significant attention and remediation, the conservation of many of the archival materials and objects from America’s past are in serious jeopardy. This article is a brief summary of the report with comparisons made between the historical institutions and the collecting institutions included in the study.
