This report contains two distinct components. The guidelines serve as a checklist of questions and observances to apply in assessing contemporary collecting as an institutional goal in your museum.

The second component consists of five case reports of museums that have undertaken contemporary collecting initiatives. These have been chosen to reflect a range of institutional types and missions.

These reports also provide the goals and objectives of the projects, the methodology used, and a critical assessment of the results. These, too, must be viewed as works-in-progress, guided by ongoing evaluation.
